This year’s Tea and Symphony takes place on Sunday March 17th, 2:30 PM at the Sooke Community Hall. The high tea is catered by the Sooke District Lioness. The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Yariv Aloni, will play Handel’s Water Music. The Chorus, under Nicholas Fairbank, will be singing three Irish songs in honour of St. Patrick’s Day.
The Lioness, who provide the treat tables at the orchestra concerts, will serve a high tea of sweet and savory finger foods, coffee and tea. The tables are always beautifully set, with fresh flowers and delicate porcelain tea cups.
Handel’s Water Music, famously composed for King George I and first performed in 1717 on a barge on the River Thames, is a series of bright, lively dance tunes of the time, such as the minuet and the hornpipe. History tells us that King George loved it and subsequent audiences have too.
The Chorus will be singing arrangements of three Irish songs: Down by the Salley Gardens, The Mountains of Mourne, and The Whistling Gypsy, arranged by Fairbank especially for the Chorus and for this concert. Allie Picketts, the rehearsal pianist for the Chorus, will be the accompanist.
