Welcome to Senior Living's new TV series "Senior Living On Location"

B.C.’s favourite seniors lifestyle magazine, Senior Living Magazine, comes to life in an exciting, and much anticipated new television series called Senior Living On Location.

Senior Living On Location takes an innovative approach to community television and storytelling, by focusing on the inspiring, informative and entertaining adventure filled stories of seniors from Vancouver Island, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland communities.

Airing now on CHEK TV, Sundays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Senior Living On Location is dedicated to changing the definition and stereotypes around aging, retirement and what it means to become a senior. The program is narrated by well know voiceover artist and radio broadcaster Barry Bowman, who brings a warm, familiar sound and creative perspective to each story segment.

“Senior Living On Location is unique because it profiles both ordinary and extra-ordinary seniors living life to it’s fullest, embarking on a wide variety of spectacular adventures,” said Barbara Risto, producer and publisher of Senior Living. “Up until now, television at the community, provincial and even national level has failed to provide seniors with quality programs that showcase the amazing things people in their 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and even their 90’s are doing.”

“Most programs targeted towards seniors focus on managing ailments and improving health and are often more about marketing products related to aging than anything else” said Risto. “The main focus of Senior Living On Location is celebrating the wide variety of people and the diverse range of active lifestyles that make up the ever growing senior populations in our local communities. ”

Senior Living On Location profiles everything from well known seniors such as artist Robert Bateman, photographer Ted Grant, paralympian Daniel Westley, and actor Bill Reiter; to stories about senior hobbyists, athletes, dancers, writers, car racers, magicians, artists, crafters, buskers, musicians, actors, divers, and entrepreneurs. Themes such as volunteerism, travel, co-housing and seniors wellness are also included. Stories were shot in Victoria, Cobble Hill, Duncan, Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, Parksville, Saltspring Island, Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, Abbotsford, New Westminster, Surrey, Delta and Tsawwassen.

“Each episode of Senior Living On Location is comprised of three to five segments, each profiling a different senior or group of seniors. Each segment takes us briefly into the lives of the seniors involved, where it is their voice, their personal stories that are being shared,” said Risto.

Senior Living On Location is brought to you in part through the generous sponsorship of

I am interested in Daynard's plight concerning his loss of his driving licence. I know what a shock that can be. Last May I had my health check for the Licence renewal. Two weeks later I had to return to the doctor to repeat the eye check as he had lost that report. In July, two months after the medical exam, I received a letter from Motor Vehicles cancelling my driver's licence (even though I had been driving since 1955 and had a clear record). The reason for the cancellation was because i "had not complied with their request for the medical report". Turned out the report was not sent to them - the doctor had lost it. Morale of this story? Check and re-check that the report had been FAXED to Motor Vehicles immediately after the medical exam. Not all doctors these days are responsible. It is up to the patient to make sure the report has gone to Motor Vehicles.

I love your "senior living on location" programming! It has extremely interesting profiles on seniors keeping busy. The sleight-of-hand segment in episode #8 chronicles my career in magic and was brilliantly formatted. I am very pleased with your professional handling of a touchy subject matter. Thank you for your consideration. By the way - segment 8 of the series was made much more interesting than I expected with the inclusion of a terrific portrayal of railroad modeling, Celtic dancing and wood working. Keep up the good work. Cheers - Ray Roch

Dear Daynard, The best organization I can think of for helping you find the resources you need is Seniors Services Society. They are located very close to the New Westminster sky train. Their phone number is 604-520-6621. All the best. Barbara Risto, Publisher

I am interested in information avilable to seniors who have a real problem . That being ,almost a sudden loss of a driving license ,starting with a routine family doctor check up at birthday time and a series of steps which seeming head to stranding us in our country home in Langley sans transportation. I admit that we should have been aware that this was happening and admit we need advice..D. Welsh, P. Eng.

Every episode is expected to air again in 13 weeks, so if you missed it the first time, it will be coming around again. At some point, we plan to put all the episodes on our website so they can be accessible 24/7. Thank you to all those who have commented here, or sent emails or phoned to tell us how much you enjoyed the show. This was a major undertaking and we're pleased to see that it is being well received by the senior community. Please help us spread the word!

i've just learned of the series and had to miss the first 2 episodes - I hope they are played at some time. Second thoughts - I was noting the comment of Cindy about how far her pension stretches and she cannot always attend activities. I'm not at the pension years yet, but fast approaching. There are organizations that sponsor kids to do activities, can this type of sponsorship be arranged for seniors? Just a thought - get a dialog going.

Wonderful! Congratulations to the Senior Living team and Barry Bowman as "the voice". We can't underestimate the power of seeing others have fun, live, move and laugh - it's motivating. Living in isolation is a serious threat to living well as we age. What you are doing at Senior Living is impressive, clearly a model for others around the world.

Loved it! Need to make sure you give information so that people within your readership can find out how and where to join and get involved. My husband and I are in transition, still working a bit, but do have more time. For future topics,I would really welcome seeing an article on realistic time management for caring for aged parents. .

I have known about laughter yoga and would love to join - in fact there are many activities and classes, and trips, I would like to join. However, my pension cant cover any of the fees so I do my own thing in my own time. I know there are many other low-income seniors who can only watch and cheer on, but that can be fun too.

I have attended 2 "senior " events at both Whistler and Jasper in the past 2 years. What has happened to these events that were,I think, organized by Fairmount Hotels/ ??? They were well attended, interesting & informative 2-4 day events. Thanks

What a great show! I laughed along with the Laughter Yoga students. This video has inspired me to find out more about laughter yoga. It looks like so much fun, I 'd like to take part. All those yogies, dancers, dragon boaters --and the clown too --look so young. There must be something to keeping active. Lee Massey

Thanks for sending this - - I was so impressed with the segment on Laughter Yoga that I forwarded your email with video link to the Activities Coordinator at the Seniors Residence where my mother lives in Ontario... I think this would be a great thing for all residential seniors settings to offer. Thanks again, Barb
