Welcome to Senior Living's new TV series "Senior Living On Location"

B.C.’s favourite seniors lifestyle magazine, Senior Living Magazine, comes to life in an exciting, and much anticipated new television series called Senior Living On Location.

Senior Living On Location takes an innovative approach to community television and storytelling, by focusing on the inspiring, informative and entertaining adventure filled stories of seniors from Vancouver Island, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland communities.

Airing now on CHEK TV, Sundays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Senior Living On Location is dedicated to changing the definition and stereotypes around aging, retirement and what it means to become a senior. The program is narrated by well know voiceover artist and radio broadcaster Barry Bowman, who brings a warm, familiar sound and creative perspective to each story segment.

“Senior Living On Location is unique because it profiles both ordinary and extra-ordinary seniors living life to it’s fullest, embarking on a wide variety of spectacular adventures,” said Barbara Risto, producer and publisher of Senior Living. “Up until now, television at the community, provincial and even national level has failed to provide seniors with quality programs that showcase the amazing things people in their 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and even their 90’s are doing.”

“Most programs targeted towards seniors focus on managing ailments and improving health and are often more about marketing products related to aging than anything else” said Risto. “The main focus of Senior Living On Location is celebrating the wide variety of people and the diverse range of active lifestyles that make up the ever growing senior populations in our local communities. ”

Senior Living On Location profiles everything from well known seniors such as artist Robert Bateman, photographer Ted Grant, paralympian Daniel Westley, and actor Bill Reiter; to stories about senior hobbyists, athletes, dancers, writers, car racers, magicians, artists, crafters, buskers, musicians, actors, divers, and entrepreneurs. Themes such as volunteerism, travel, co-housing and seniors wellness are also included. Stories were shot in Victoria, Cobble Hill, Duncan, Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, Parksville, Saltspring Island, Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, Abbotsford, New Westminster, Surrey, Delta and Tsawwassen.

“Each episode of Senior Living On Location is comprised of three to five segments, each profiling a different senior or group of seniors. Each segment takes us briefly into the lives of the seniors involved, where it is their voice, their personal stories that are being shared,” said Risto.

Senior Living On Location is brought to you in part through the generous sponsorship of

To Stan - it's possible that you may have opened two windows. I accidently did that one day and had one video playing in the background while I was trying to watch another.

I'm 85 years young, live in Sidney, and I believe I'm undoubtedly the only Canadian High School dropout who was a Hollywood Director who worked with Elizabeth Taylor, Demi Moore, Bill Cosby, and other 'stars' and at the risk of seeming egotistical I think I'd make an interesting guest on your fine program. SENIOR LIVING ON LOCATION - shown on Sunday November 25th 2012 SECOND AIRING February 24th, 2013 (CHEK TV - 2.30pm) “A Craft of Ones Own” I would like to thank Senior Living On Location and the wonderful CHEK TV team who produced the presentation about the Fired Up! Contemporary Works In Clay’s annual exhibition and sale. This event is always held during the last weekend of May in the Metchosin Community Hall. I was one of the fortunate artists who was given a personal interview in my own Studio and Gallery. I would like to thank both the interviewer, Daniella Cousin and the photographer David Malysheff, who conducted this production. Both my husband and I were made to feel so comfortable and relaxed and it was actually fun to experience what I thought would be a difficult situation. One is always a little apprehensive to read the published version of an edited article you write and even more so to view a live video interview. We were personally thrilled and grateful for how the production showed. To view and listen to the story, was like, all at once, reading and watching an article that had been edited by a talented individual. The interviewer, the photographer and the narrator, presented the story and information beautifully. We, Basil and Glenys Marshall-Inman, live so far from our families in the South Pacific and I would love to be able to have an avenue for them to access the show on-line. Do you think these shows will be available in the future through your website? On behalf of Fired Up! Contemporary Works In Clay - THANK YOU to Senior Living on Location, good luck for future publications, you are doing a great job!

Hello Starr, Hello Barbara and all who were part of the Senior Living segment you so kindly asked me to participate in. A huge hello to the crew! I must apologize for not responding with hearty praise for the show earlier than this. On August 13th I was admitted to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC with Pneumonia and Pleurisy. I was in hospital for three days. After that I found my breathing becoming more and more laboured. The upshoot of that was that at the end of September I stayed in the same hospital for seven days with heart failure. The same scenario happened in 2001 when I was playing Tevye in "Fiddler On The Roof". Viral Pneumonia "got into my heart" and, as my cardiologist said to me; "Don't you understand Bill, you were at the Pearly Gates". Strange that the same thing happened this summer! I am coming around (an angioplasty showed my heart's arteries and valves etc to be in great shape). The lower left chamber of my heart is weak and I have atrial fibrillation (which I didn't have in '01). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atrial_fibrillation But guys! (I call men and women I like - "guys") Guys! You did a wonderful job with editing and creating an interesting story around my retirement and the life my wife Ebba and I live now. I was very, very pleased. I am a fan of the show. Thank you so very much!! Senior Living fan. Bill Reiter

I was really impressed with your show. I think it will be a huge succcess! The segment on Fizzlepop the Clown and the Red Skelton show "Reflections of Red", was very well done. I think the audience base will grow every year as it is informative entertaining and there is a need for this type of programming. Keep up the good work!

Re: Ladner Woodworkers Club..Of course we wish our segment had been twice as long, but seriously folks..it was well done and very fair..and as others have mentioned, if it motivates people to get up and get going it has accomplished something worthwhile. How about a show on senior tap-dancing woodworking magicians who wear kilts. Good work..keep it up.!!

What a great way to provide seniors with options for recreation and sporting activities. Seeing actual seniors playing these roles is always inspirational. Best wishes for continued success!

Very timely stuff. With the aging population and peopleliving longer and healthier lifestyles there has been no better time than now to air such a progrm. As well ther is very little programming being aired for this quickly growing segment of our population. The shows sofar have been not only entertaining but informative and inspiring as well. I hope to see this show moving forward across the country.

I really enjoyed the segment on senior Scuba Divers - it brought back many memories and motivation to get back in the water. :-)

Seniors are becoming a very large segment of the population, and for many, the word "Senior" has strong negative implications - they feel that it implies that the best times are already gone by. I think that your program is addressing that negative connotation in a very positive and entertaining way - there are many, many, many of us who do NOT see our senior years negatively! Your segments on strong, interesting, active and happy seniors are a great way to make it clear that there is LOTS of life in our later years. Thank you for that, and thank you for your great work in shooting, preparing, and presenting my segment. I wish you great success in future programs. Angie

We were so pleased that Senior Living did a segment on the Vaudevillians. We are members of the troupe and thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to entertain at many seniors residences throughout the Lower Mainland. We work very hard rehearsing 10 months of the year and performing 25-28 shows a year but it is well worth it to bring smiles to peoples faces and help students with their education. We are proud to have established a perpetual Bursary that is in excess of $70,000 that enables us to fund 3 or 4 Bursaries every year. Not bad for a group of retired folks!

Thank you for the privilege of being part of your program. After a couple hours of filming, we had no idea what the finished product would look like. You did a fabulous job of highlighting how we travel Canada on a minimal budget, our books and products, and making it an appealing story. What fun! Keep up the good work of showcasing seniors that aren't willing to sit around and atrophy. Barb and Dave Rees

Watched episode 8 with some senior friends who were very impressed with the variety of activities they could get involved in. They found Senior Living on Location very informative, entertaining, and interesting. Some have been following every episode. As for my Celtic dancing friends, their comments were very favourable and thought that the editing was first class.

Thank you so much for putting on a Great Show. My Wife and I are into Cycling and really enjoyed watching that segment. Any form of exercise is good and you covered quite a variety both in and outdoors.

A note of appreciation for your inclusion of a video recently of The Vaudevillians. As a part of the troupe, we were pleased to see the film on TV, and we commend you on its quality and content. Other non-profit organizations should benefit from similar publicity, and we thank you sincerely for including us in your excellent program.

This video project is a brilliant idea. It reaches people who are unable to get out or who live in remote areas and opens up our minds as to what might be possible for each of us as we grow older. I want everyone one to know that Laughter Yoga classes are by donation and for people who can't afford to leave a monetary donation how about hugs and kisses!!! At least that is the way my classes are structured. Check it out with your local Laughter Yoga club. For more information on Laughter Yoga in Victoria you can reach me at genefurbee@telus.net
