Since the creation of Skype in 2003, communicating with family and friends over the Internet has never been easier and more fun.

Not sure what Skype is? Well, Skype is a program that allows you to communicate with family and friends using voice, video and instant messaging over the Internet.

Unlike traditional phone lines, Skype is free. Yes, you can call other Skype users for free, anywhere in the world unless you call a landline or mobile device in which you are required to buy Skype minutes for your account to cover the cost.

The Skype community is growing. As of September 2011, there were 663 million registered Skype users and recently it has been recorded that there were 38 million users on concurrently.

With so many registered users, it is recommended that you go into your privacy settings to make sure that you are set to only receive calls from people in your contact list.

To access your privacy settings:

  1. Go into your Skype account settings.
  2. Now that you are looking at your Account Settings, click once on the Privacy tab located on the left panel.
  3. Change your settings to receive calls from Contacts NOT everyone.

If you do receive a contact request from someone you don't know, it is always a great idea to click once on the Block button. If you are unsure of who the person is that is requesting contact, (sometimes people have unusual Skype names or email addresses) please click once on decline until you can confirm that you know who they are.

Whether you are video calling a friend within Canada, or relatives as far away as South Africa, Skype is the right application for you.

Have fun!

Skype is great if you have family and friends across the country - or in my case, in Germany - not just for the fact that it is free, but with the video chat, it almost feels like they are right in front of me while we have a conversation. Whether or not you NEED it is debatable but it definitely is something I'm not willing to live without.

Do I really need Skype? I have no video nor IM capabililty (don't want it!) and long disitance to almost any place on Earth costs .04c per minute. So I can talk for an hour for $2.40. I don't think t's worthwhile n my case.
