COMPUTER TIPS

Making the Web Work Better
(and More Easily) for You

• You can enlarge the text on any Web page. In Windows, press Ctrl and the plus or minus keys (for bigger or smaller fonts); on the Mac, it’s the Command key and plus or minus. You can also enlarge the entire Web page or document in Windows by pressing the Control key as you turn the wheel on top of your mouse. On the Mac, this enlarges the entire screen image

• Tap the Space bar to scroll down on a Web page by one full screen. Add the Shift key to scroll back up

• You don’t have to type “http://www” into your Web browser. Just type the remainder: “nytimes.com” or “dilbert.com,” for example. (In the Safari browser, you can even leave off the “.com” part.

• When you’re filling in the boxes on a Web page (like City, Province, Postal Code), you can press the Tab key to jump from box to box, rather than clicking. Add the Shift key to jump through the boxes backward.

STAYING AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION ONLINE

Never underestimate the power of online advertising in marketing your business to potential customers who are over the age of 50. In actuality, the senior and baby boomer internet users rival young users.

On-line Seniors Rival Young Users

More than three-fourths (77%) of online users ages 65+ say they shop online, the highest percentage among any generational group, according to a study by the Cable and Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM).using laptop

The senior demographic, along with the younger baby boomers, make the Internet an integral part of their everyday lives.

Seniors regularly use email (94%), go to the Internet to look up health and medical information (71%), read news (70%), and manage their finances and banking (59%). About half (47%) of seniors regularly play free online games.

Boomers (ages 45-64) are heavy users as well, and come close to mirroring the senior statistics. 93% use email, 71% shop online, 73% read news online, 67% gather information, 66% pay bills. 30% regularly watch videos online, 39% go to networking websites, forums, message boards and chat rooms.

Seniors aren’t quite as quick to adopt new technology, but baby boomers are nearly as likely as younger generations to own a digital camera, DVD player and cell phone.

Boomers and seniors, who hold over 70% of North America’s purchasing power, are obviously active online users and are more comfortable with computer technology than one might commonly think.

Promoting your products or services online is a prudent step to take alongside print advertising. Marketing studies show that combining Internet advertising with print advertising within a campaign creates results greater than sum of the two.

Inspiration & Ideas

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

A large percentage of Senior Living’s readers are singles looking for ways to meet others. We believe this could be a great opportunity for businesses who advertise regularly in Senior Living to create or sponsor a positive event, such as a singles’ mixer, while promoting themselves.

We’re asking our readers to send us their feedback as to what form such a function might take. We’ll share that information with you and let you know if there appears to be good interest.

Do you have the space to throw a party or host social mixer where singles could gather and get to know each other? The resources to provide entertainment? Refreshments? Transportation? If there are a number of businesses interested, we may suggest that each take a turn hosting an event. If we have enough single seniors expressing an interest for a social event, along with business willing to host such a gathering, Senior Living will help promote this event in our magazine, readers newsletter and website.

Please consider the possibilities and let us know if you’d like to get behind this idea. Please email us at office@seniorlivingmag.com Subject: Single Senior Event

REDUCE YOUR ROAMING CHARGES

If you plan to do any traveling, either business or pleasure, you should call your cell phone provider to ask what types of roaming using laptopoffers are available. Many of them will set you up with a plan to cover your travel time that saves you the high roaming charges. It won't eliminate them entirely, but you'll get a reduced rate. We were told by both Telus and Rogers Wireless that they can usually give you a better deal on your roaming charges if you call them before you leave on your trip and ask them for a better rate.

WRITE AN ARTICLE

Writing articles on topics related to your business expertise is an excellent business promotion technique. For as little as $50 per month, you can add this internet option to your print campaign. Ask A Pro is a section on our website containing articles written by our advertisers on a variety of topics related to their particular industry.

Quality, well-written articles help build positive word-of-mouth, and increase profits. Articles may include interesting facts, easy-to-read, simple instructions and/or accurate, up-to-date information. The article should be relevant to your business and the products or services you are offering - the more specific your topic, the better. For instance, if you’re a realtor, you could write a piece on preparing your home to be shown.

The wonderful thing about this option is that you can say so much more than you can usually say in a display ad. Articles can be up to 1,000 words in length, can contain photos, and a link to your own website.pen
