More than three-fourths (77%) of online users ages 65+ say they shop online, the highest percentage among any generational group, according to a study by the Cable and Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM).
The senior demographic, along with the younger baby boomers, make the Internet an integral part of their everyday lives.
Seniors regularly use email (94%), go to the Internet to look up health and medical information (71%), read news (70%), and manage their finances and banking (59%). About half (47%) of seniors regularly play free online games.
Boomers (ages 45-64) are heavy users as well, and come close to mirroring the senior statistics. 93% use email, 71% shop online, 73% read news online, 67% gather information, 66% pay bills. 30% regularly watch videos online, 39% go to networking websites, forums, message boards and chat rooms.
Seniors aren’t quite as quick to adopt new technology, but baby boomers are nearly as likely as younger generations to own a digital camera, DVD player and cell phone.
Boomers and seniors, who hold over 70% of North America’s purchasing power, are obviously active online users and are more comfortable with computer technology than one might commonly think.
Promoting your products or services online is a prudent step to take alongside print advertising. Marketing studies show that combining Internet advertising with print advertising within a campaign creates results greater than sum of the two.
