How Do Single Seniors meet?

Posted: Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Last month we discussed things to do on a first date. Some of you pointed out that we skipped an important step – how to meet that potential date. Vancouver Island offers many opportunities to meet new people in a natural way. Here are some suggestions for meeting other singles locally.

Where do you feel that single seniors can be found? Please send us your ideas, we’d love to share them with the rest of our readers.

Or, is there a magic place that we don’t know about? As an example, years ago in San Francisco it was common knowledge that, on a particular night of the week, singles shopped at the Marina Safeway. This was never written about or posted anywhere, but everyone just seemed to know that that was the place to go. Do you know of any similar happenings on the Island?

In finding a potential partner, it doesn't matter what methods you use, it only matters that you do something – anything – to bring more interesting people into your life. You must make some effort. Be proactive and “put yourself out there”! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Pursue your hobby or try out a new one

For those passionate about a particular hobby (i.e. writing, painting, archeology, botany, singing, walking, playing bridge, the list goes on...), look for a community group that services other people with similar interests. Vancouver Island’s many colleges and universities offer a bounty of courses for adults in a wide range of subjects. And, our recreation centers are spilling over with classes and events catering to a myriad of interests. Take a chance and try a new hobby, or learn a new sport or game. It’s not about how good you are at the activity, it’s about being among other people and enjoying yourself.

Take in a sporting event

For women in particular, attending a sporting event with other single friends is likely to at least lead to a conversation with a stranger, since single females are often in short supply.

Go out for coffee

Sounds simple and it is. Go by yourself to a busy coffee shop, or bring a friend if that helps you feel more relaxed. Bring a book and linger over your latte and just be friendly and open to talking to others around you.

Take a walk

The Island is full of avid walkers and beautiful places to walk. Take advantage of this and get out where other people go strolling. If you don’t like to walk alone and you don’t have a dog or a friend to take along, borrow a dog! Men, everyone knows that dogs are “lady Velcro,” and great conversation starters.

Volunteer

Apart from the positive effect it has on your community, volunteering also offers incredible networking opportunities where you can develop lasting personal and professional relationships. (With no fees and no tuition!) There are even specific volunteer organizations geared only towards singles that you can join, knowing that while you are donating your time to a worthy cause, you'll also be expanding your personal network to include other, like minded singles also looking for a date. (See this month’s article on volunteering)

Say yes!

Accept any invitations that come your way. You never know who you might meet, if you just get yourself out among other people.

Vacation on a singles cruise

This isn’t exactly local, but if you plan on going on vacation anyway, why not make it a singles cruise? You may have to pay a singles supplement, but many of the cruises catering to singles have set fares that allow you to either have your own room, or they pair you up with another single of the same sex to save you both some cash. Most singles cruises seem to attract a wide range of eligible singles, however, many now offer age-related events with common groupings for seniors, and baby boomers. If you’re concerned about the age range available on a cruise you’re interested in, don't hesitate to contact the organizer and ask for specifics. Some cruise lines are even starting to waive the single supplement. Your travel agent may have more specifics on which cruise lines are catering to the single traveler.

Get professional help

If letting someone else do the coordinating makes it easier for you, there are several companies in the area which work to make meeting other singles easy and stress-free.

Each and every one of us deserves a fulfilling partnership, and the first step of that process is meeting someone new. Extend yourself and try something new and you’re bound to meet new people.
