The program highlights the remarkable achievements of a handful of female musicians, true pioneers, who challenged social conventions in order to pursue both performance and composition careers. Sacred and secular works by Vittoria Aleotti, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Clara Schumann, Amy Beach and others will be performed by the choir and soloists, accompanied by pianist Michael Gaudet.
Virtually all of them sang and played piano and other instruments, and all were considered audacious or even improper for persisting with their profession within marriage and even as mothers. While most of them were fortunate in having male champions who assisted or at least permitted their pursuit of music, all of them had to push against the monolithic, patriarchal establishment, with its rigid definition of proper roles for women.
Regardless of the constraints and undoubted disapproval, all of these passionately dedicated women managed to produce musical works of exceptional beauty and originality that have stood the tests of both time and the human heart.
This concert is repeated on Sunday, January 28, 3:00 pm at Shoal Centre in Sidney.
