Beginning in the 18th century French musicians increasingly went to Italy to study, and Italian virtuosi were heard more frequently in Paris. Over time Italian style and forms (concerto, opera) superseded French forms in the popular taste. This did not happen without a great deal of debate, as seen in the music for the Ballet and the Opera. The two camps, the so-called “Lullistes” and “Rameauneurs”, fought a pamphlet war over the issue for the rest of the decade.
