TheatreOne presents Emerging Voices
Staged Readings of New Plays Directed by Garry Davey
The Ginger Goodwin Story by Michael Stephen
January 10, 2012
Nanaimo, BC – The Dunsmuir mines are the subject of the next staged reading in the Emerging Voices series – The Ginger Goodwin Story by Michael Stephen. This compelling play tells the story of Albert (Ginger) Goodwin, a coal miner and labour leader who worked in Robert Dunsmuir’s mines in Cumberland and was allegedly killed by the RCMP for stirring up unrest among the workers and his involvement in the Cumberland Miner’s strike in the early 1900’s.
Four talented professional actors will be working with TheatreOne’s Artistic Director Garry Davey to present this staged reading, all drawn from the mid-island region: Jessica Lowry from Ladysmith, Adrian Hough from Nanaimo, and Matthew Walker and Catherine Caines from Gabriola Island.
The Emerging Voices series of staged readings of new Canadian scripts provides an important venue through which established and emerging writers can have new plays workshopped by professional artists and read before an audience, receiving valuable feedback in this important part of the creative process.
Coming up on February 7, Emerging Voices presents a newly developed draft of Good-Housekeeping by Nicolle Nattrass of Nanaimo, first presented in an earlier draft in Emerging Voices 2009.
All readings are presented at The Coast Bastion Inn – 11 Bastion St. at 7.30pm. Admission is by donation. TheatreOne is grateful for the ongoing sponsorship of Emerging Voices by Minnoz Restaurant in The Coast Bastion Inn.
