Vote for your favourites in nine categories, including a new award introduced this year, for the restaurant that makes the best use of local ingredients. Nadine Wiepning of TheatreOne, comments, "This is award is meant to encourage restaurants to source their ingredients locally, as well as to educate the public about eating closer to home. We know there are different ideas about what is local or regional, such as from BC, from Vancouver Island or from the Cowichan Valley. But the point is that by eating locally, we are strengthening a weak and volatile global food system. Plus, local food is healthier and tastier! New to the Bite of Nanaimo, Markt Artisan Deli features local meat in all his charcuterie, including the sausage roll appetizer. Diners Rendezvous regular menu already features 100 mile diet for 85% of their menu, using Cowichan & Comox Valley produce, local seafood, and shellfish. As well, Chef Jason Harbo of Lighthouse Bistro created their signature ‘West Coast/Euro seasonally inspired menu filled with culinary creations showcasing local regional ingredients.' We are excited to feature some of our past loyal participants, Nanaimo's best eating establishments, and to introduce the newest additions to the Bite, including A Wee Cupcakery, Diner's Rendezvous, Gryphon's Lair, Markt Artisan Deli, Parfait Gourmet Desserts, and PollyAnna's."

The Bite is becoming more environmentally responsible every year! We have drastically reduced our waste by utilizing event sponsor EnviroCore's composting services for food scraps as well as biodegradable utensils and plates.

There will be an "After Bite" event hosted by Diners Rendezvous, open to the general public. All interested participants and guests can unwind after this very busy event. There will be no cover charge, and a DJ will entertain.

Tickets to the Bite are $12. Available at Tourism Nanaimo (cash only) and participating vendors (except Country Grocer), and online at www.theatreone.org Food/Drink Tickets $1 each inside event to exchange for "bites" priced $1 - $5.
