The Philharmonic Fling - Sooke Philharmonic orchestra
South Vancouver Island
Sun. July 18th, 2010 2:30pm
The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing the 9th annual Philharmonic "Fling!", an open air pops concert in a park by the sea in Sooke. The gates will open at 1 PM to allow everyone to stake out their favourite spot (bring a blanket or lawn chairs), and perhaps enjoy a picnic, either bring your own or enjoy the on site concession, run by the Sooke Transition House - all proceeds from refreshment sales go towards supporting their charitable operations. This year you will be able to enjoy the wonderful new stage and facilities at Ed Macgregor Park.
Under the baton of conductor Christopher Taber, the concert features soprano soloist Kathy Alexander, singing some jazz favorites from Duke Ellington to George Gershwin. Kathy is perhaps best known in the Victoria area as a choir director with the Victoria Children's Choir. The orchestra will perform a mix of works from Mozart to Strauss. The afternoon will also include The Sooke Pipes and Drums under Pipe Major Angus Stanfield.
Admission to the concert is FREE. The concert is sponsored in part by Butler Brothers Supplies Ltd. and the Don Chrysler Memorial Fund. Rain venue: Sooke Community Hall.
