In spring 2011, the Victoria Gilbert and Sullivan Society is elated to be presenting The Mikado, one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most famous comic operas. Having performed a concert version of The Mikado in the Fall of 2009, the songs and story are familiar to the minds of our members.
About The Mikado
The theme of The Mikado is what one is willing to sacrifice for love: Security? Riches? Your head?
Young Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado, left the imperial court to escape an arranged marriage with an unpleasant older woman. Nanki-Poo, in disguise as a poor musician, meets and falls in love with Yum-Yum, but, alas, Yum-Yum is betrothed to the town executioner, Ko-Ko.
Hilarity ensues as the characters try and one-up each other in search for the most logical solution to the problem. Set in Japan, Gilbert was able to satirize British politics and institutions from a metaphorical distance.
There's romance, suspense, humour, and, if you need more convincing, Japanese school girls!
