Built by Luney Bros Ltd

Luney Bros. Ltd. was a pioneer construction company in Victoria started by William and Walter Luney. Their character and work ethics were forged early in life growing up with an alcoholic father and a stern authoritarian mother.

This book is about William and Walter’s setbacks, struggles and success in reaching the pinnacle of the commercial construction industry in Victoria. It chronicles, for the first time, the buildings Luney Bros. constructed and gives an overview of the construction business in Victoria from 1885 – 1962.   Eight decades of the Luney family built over 180 buildings in the Victoria region for a value of $29,000,000. Today $29-million-worth of construction does not sound much, but when they began work, a good quality house could be built for $2,000. Their contribution to Victoria’s streetscape was unparalleled and a legacy of historical buildings still stand throughout Victoria and environs - the Crystal Garden, Camosun College Young Building, main branches of the Royal Bank and the Bank of Montreal, C.P.R. Terminal Building,  and many others.
