The Winter Blues is linked to a biochemical imbalance in the brain, which is prompted by shorter daylight hours and a lack of sunlight, according to the American Psychiatric Association.
"It is thought that about five percent of people in the U.S. have SAD," according to Michael Terman, director of the Center for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms, Columbia University Medical Center, New York. "An additional ten to 15 percent of people have milder versions of the symptoms, including low mood, low energy, oversleeping and overeating," Terman said.
Increased exposure to sunlight can improve symptoms of the Winter Blues and SAD, according to the American Psychiatric Association. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry.
"Light is nature's stimulant and is an effective means to revitalize and reset our Circadian rhythms or natural body clocks," said Verilux, Inc. President Nicholas Harmon. "Natural spectrum or natural 'white light' is effective in addressing the depression associated with reduced exposure to sunlight. Many studies have found it to be a side-effect free alternative to anti-depressant pills and in some cases more effective."
"People suffering from SAD can experience the healing power of light using a light therapy box. Verilux® Natural Spectrum® light simulates natural outdoor light, causing a biochemical change in the brain that improves mood, increases energy and reduces other symptoms such as depression and cravings for sweets and carbohydrates," said Harmon. "A study by Mayo Clinic published in 2008 states that 'light therapy treatment can improve the depressed mood of seasonal affective disorder and perhaps other types of depression too'."
