EnerCare urges homeowners who hear any of these lines to be wary of entering into any agreement with the individual.

Some door-to-door water heater sales tactics have become a growing nuisance for consumers and is nearing the top of homeowner complaints. Many consumers are unaware that organizations such as Enbridge, Direct Energy and other government agencies do not promote the exchange of water heaters door-to-door, and as a result, are entering into contracts with salespeople claiming to be from such organizations. If someone does come to your door to service your water heater without an appointment, they very likely are not from your current water heater provider and are there to try to get you to sign a new contract.

“Water heater fraud can happen at any time to anyone,” said Barry Zeidenberg, Director of Marketing with EnerCare Inc., a leading provider of energy efficient products and water heater rentals. “When speaking to a salesperson at your door, there can be much confusion about what they are actually offering you and what you are getting yourself locked into by signing a contract.”

Zeidenberg explains that the best thing homeowners can do to protect themselves is to be prepared for those conversations. Homeowners should also be on the lookout for potential warning signs, especially if the salesperson says anything like:

• “We're from your current water heater provider, utility or local municipality.”

• “Government regulations say your plastic venting system for your water heater needs to be replaced due to safety reasons.”

• “Our water heaters are more efficient than the one you have in your home.”

• “We can replace your old water heater free of charge.”

• “We need to see your current bill.”

EnerCare urges homeowners who hear any of these lines to be wary of entering into any agreement with the individual. If you are still unsure about whether the person you are dealing with is trustworthy, be sure to ask them for identification and don't be afraid to call your current provider for a second opinion.
